I’m not allowed to have favourites

Diver removing a snagged line, hook and lure from a sea fan

Like a mother and her offspring I know, as a development officer, I should guard against having favourites and I do admire all my groups. However as a teenager I would have liked to be a marine biologist and, hailing from Pompey, I have always felt the call of the sea. So it is not suprising that I have a particular attachment for Neptunes Army of Rubbish Cleaners (NARC). I visited my main contact, the wonderfully named Davey Jones, today at the docks in Milford Haven to discuss the chances of us being able to fund some of their clean up work this year. They get together as volunteers and do underwater litter picks using subaqua gear in the seas and river mouths of Pembrokeshire. It is shocking the amount of waste they get out, particularly fishing weights and discard lines and lost nets which continue to ‘ghost fish’ long after they have been lost, trapping our marine wildlife and condemning them to a lingering death. If you want to find out more about them go to

 their website at http://www.narc-cc.org.uk/
